How Not To Be Dependant On One Woman
August 29, 2005 by Thundercat
n3rv1 has one hell of a post over on mASF about something he calls "Dependancy." We all know how sometimes a guy can get hung up on that "one special girl," and when that happens, he ignores all other possibilities with women only to eventually find out that the girl of his desire just wants to be "friends." Well, n3rv1 offers a solution to that predicament…
n3rv1 writes:
Variation.I’m not a drug councelor or anywhere near an expert on the issue, so what I mean by "dependency" is a subtle kind of mental weakness that keeps a guy from doing things out of the ordinary, like, say, having sex with different women.
As I see it, dependency keeps a guy in his comfort zone. This is a big issue. He learns to depend on circumstances being familiar. His system can’t cope unless he is "in his element," so to speak. This inability to cope with new situations will, over time, translate into an unwillingness to ACT outside of the boundaries of what’s known and predictable.
This unwillingness to act is what I mean by "dependency."
The best cure for this is VARIATION in all senses of the meaning.
Mix it up. Keep things fresh. Engage everything. These words are purposely ambiguous.
Hovering over insignifcant details shouldn’t be allowed. Sticking to one train of thought for too long should become UNCOMFORTABLE. "New" things should no longer be seen as
"new," but "natural."I seriously think this issue and explanation is multi-applicable. I think it has to do with PU, sexual activity, probably even drug/substance use, feelings of motivation, happiness, and a whole lot of other shit that I can’t explain.
Personal, REAL LIFE examples of how I try to keep things in variation include, but are in no way limited to:
Physical Activities: Obviously sex, lifting weights, playing frisbee golf, swimming, canoeing, hiking, camping, biking, fishing, cooking outdoors, playing drums, painting, working two part-time jobs instead of one full-time job, walking as transportation, doing weird shit, etc.
Mental Activities: #1 MOST IMPORTANT: TALKING TO STRANGERS (there’s no better mental exercise for me than having quick connections with random people — it’s a dual exercise in wit and empathy, it’s not PU, it’s nothing that takes EFFORT, it’s just an overall openness and compassion for other human beings), listening to as wide a variety of music as possible, reading (philosophy, art, comparative mythology, great literary works, science magazines, psychology, PU, current affairs, history, comic books, etc) writing(***PU JOURNAL*** –> key item: keeping track of approaches and random interactions I’ve had throughout the day keeps positive experiences in my conscious sphere, making it easier for me to project positive friendly-guy vibes}, interesting-event journal, dream journal, keeping track of upcoming events, creative writing, mASF, written correspondence, chat, random thoughts jotted down on post-it notes, etc), watching movies and TV (which I don’t get enough of — with no cable access and a budget too tight for rentals or high-speed internet I’m kind of out of touch with pop culture)
The main point I’m trying to make is that it is possible to INGRAIN VARIETY into your behavior and lifestyle, not in a drastic, earth-shattering way, but in MANY realistic, subtle, yet impactful ways.
I wholeheartedly agree with n3rv1′s assessment here. It’s really foolish to latch on to just ONE woman (at least until you’re married or in a relationship). You have to keep your options open and meet lots of women. This little tactic will really help you from getting your heart broken.

Liverpool must improve standards – Slot
By Sonny Cohen
Liverpool boss Arne Slot said that his side would
need to up their levels if they wanted to win the Champions
League this season, despite winning all six of their league phase ties so far:
‘I agree that games that you don’t play well you have
to win but you cannot concede so many chances.
‘Our standards have to go up if we want to achieve something in this
competition. Although they (Girona) have a very good game idea there will be teams that are even better than this if
you come up with this intensity we had today on another day
you concede 2-3 goals.’
20:07
Liverpool lucky to receive penalty?
By Sonny Cohen
Well that is the view of former Manchester United defender
Rio Ferdinand as he told TNT Sports ‘I think there is no intent and clumsy is the best word.
He has given an opportunity to the referee.’
Steve McManaman seemingly felt the same way even going on to say he would be ‘distraught’ if
that penalty was given against him.
Steve McManaman says he would be ‘DISTRAUGHT’ over Liverpool penalty
The Reds all but qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night as
they kept up their perfect record in the competition, taking their total to six wins from six games.

Another clean sheet
By Harry Bamforth
Liverpool’s defensive record in the Champions League is getting silly.
That is their fifth clean sheet in six games in the competition so far, and they have only conceded one goal.
They looked a little frazzled in the first half but were barely tested at all in the second.
Alisson also looked very comfortable back in goal, which is a huge boost for Arne Slot.
19:50
‘Liverpool made it look easy’
By Harry Bamforth
Steve McManaman, for Liverpool midfielder, on TNT Sports:
You have to be impressed by what Liverpool have
achieved. Away from home in Europe is tough and they have made it look quite
easy. It didn’t need to be outstanding.
The manager made a few changes, which will benefit the squad but all in all, he can do
what he wants now, the hard work has been done.
19:48
Slot Machine rolls on
By Harry Bamforth
This Liverpool side just know how to get the job done, they really
do.
There is no doubt that the Reds weren’t at their best tonight,
but after a frantic first-half, they just found a way to calm the game down.
That’s the Arne Slot way.
The Dutchman is yet to drop points in Europe as Liverpool boss, it’s utterly ridiculous at this point.
Six wins from six for the Reds and they have practically secured their spot in the next round.
Slot hardly looks happy about it in this photo, does he?
I bet he is deep down though…
19:42
WATCH: Salah scores from the spot
By Harry Bamforth
After missing against Real Madrid in Liverpool’s last Champions League game,
Mo Salah was always going to score this time.
This time he simply stroked it into the corner, So
cool, calm, and collected from Salah.
That’s his 16th goal in all competitions now,
simply mental.
19:40
Salah makes history
By Harry Bamforth
Mo Salah just keeps on breaking records.
The Liverpool winger was far from his best today but Girona could still not keep him out.
Salah’s second-half penalty means he is the first Liverpool player in history to reach 50 goals in European competition.
The ‘Egyptian King’ just keeps on finding ways to score, no matter how well he is playing.
He is having one hell of a season.
19:36
FULL-TIME: Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
It’s six wins from six for Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s side were far from their best but Mo Salah’s second-half penalty maintains their 100 per cent record.
They are as good as through to the knockout stages and it was a very
professional job from the Reds.
Another big result for them.
19:35, 94′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
That would have wrapped it up.
Liverpool break and Dominik Szoboszlai combines with Mo Salah before the latter has
a crack.
His effort takes a slight deflection and now Liverpool have
a corner in the final minute.
19:34, 93′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Joe Gomez wins a free-kick off Christian Stuani and it
looks like that will be that.
It’s been a very professional away performance in this second
half from Liverpool.
They have barely put a foot wrong.
19:32
FOUR added minutes
By Harry Bamforth
We are actually getting some stoppage time in this half, but only four minutes.
That is probably not enough time for Girona to find an equaliser,
but they could prove me wrong.
19:30, 88′
SUBSTITUTION: Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
It looks as if Arne Slot just wants his side to see this one out calmly now.
The Dutchman has hooked Luis Diaz and replaced him with Wataru Endo for the final few minutes.
A pretty defensive substitution.
19:28, 87′
YELLOW CARD: Girona 0-1 Liverpool (Frances)
By Harry Bamforth
That’s as obvious of a yellow card as you will ever see.
Alejandro Frances pulls Cody Gakpo’s shirt for a good five seconds as the Dutchman tries to storm away on the counter.
Eventually, Gakpo gives up and Frances gets a
booking.
19:26, 85′
GOOD SAVE! Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
My word, Trent Alexander-Arnold is very good
at free-kicks, isn’t he?
He bends one brilliantly toward the top corner but Paulo Gazzaniga does well to get across and turn it behind for a corner.
Good strike and a good save. Good football all-round.
19:24, 83′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Girona have barely had a sniff of goal in this second half, well, until now.
They finally get a bit of momentum going forward but it ends with Ivan Martin blasting the ball straight at Joe Gomez.
The hosts are running out of time to find an equaliser.
19:22, 80′
YELLOW CARD: Girona 0-1 Liverpool (Gomez)
By Harry Bamforth
The yellow card is back out.
This time it is shown in the direction of Joe
Gomez for a silly challenge on Christian Stuani.
He looks pretty unbothered by the booking though,
does Gomez.
19:20, 79′
CHANCE! Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Mo Salah, is that really you?
Liverpool’s main man picks the ball up on the right-hand side of the area
and cuts inside. His classic move.
But then he uncharacteristically bends the ball comfortably over the bar.
I mean, it’s not even close.
19:18, 76′
SUBSTITUTION: Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Time for some more substitutions for both teams.
Harvey Elliott is on for Liverpool, replacing Curtis
Jones for the final 15-odd minutes.
Meanwhile, Ivan Martin and Jhon Solis are on for Girona
with Daley Blind and Donny van de Beek making way.
19:14, 73′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Liverpool have the control that they were lacking in the first half now.
The visitors are having all the ball and the erratic
nature of the match feels well in the past now.
This is the type of football we have come accustomed to with Arne Slot’s side.
19:13, 72′
SUBSTITUTION: Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Darwin Nunez’s night is over.
It’s been another disappointing night for the
striker and you can see it on his face as he trudges off.
He is replaced by Cody Gakpo, who looks a little more chipper.
Michel also makes some changes as Bryan Gil and
Arnaut Danjuma come off for Christian Stuani and Portu.
19:10, 68′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Oooh, Luis Diaz is not a happy bunny whatsoever.
Alejandro Frances comes flying across Diaz and he goes down in a heap, but
the referee days to play on.
A bit weird because if he thought it was a dive, surely he should be booked.
19:06, 64′
Girona 0-1 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
The noise level has just gone up a notch in here!
The Girona fans are willing their side forward now and the
team are certainly responding.
We really have a game on our hands now.
19:03, 63′
Goal:Girona 0-1 Liverpool (Salah pen 63′)
By Harry Bamforth
Mo Salah does it again!
There’s no messing about this time around from the winger as he sends Paulo Gazzaniga the
wrong way.
Liverpool really needed that, they weren’t looking likely to score from open play.
Could that be the goal to send them through?
19:02, 62′
PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!
By Harry Bamforth
It’s been given.
It feels a little harsh on Donny van de Beek, but it was a silly challenge.
Now Mo Salah will step up…
19:01, 60′
VAR CHECKING PENALTY
By Harry Bamforth
Oh, hello…
VAR are checking for a Liverpool penalty as Luis Diaz does
down after Donny van de Beek steps on his Achilles.
The referee is then sent to the monitor… we know what that
means.
19:01, 59′
BIG SAVE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
My word, this is getting a bit chaotic.
Pretty much all 20 outfield players find themselves in the area and Luis Diaz is bundled over in the penalty area.
Ryan Gravenberch does then slide the ball through to Andrew
Robertson.
But Paulo Gazzaniga is equal to the full-back’s
effort.
18:59, 58′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
It’s all Liverpool right now but they look a little devoid
of ideas, it has to be said.
Girona are just sitting back and the Reds are not looking likely to break them down at this moment in time.
A few changes could make the difference here.
18:57, 55′
YELLOW CARD: Girona 0-0 Liverpool (Romeu)
By Harry Bamforth
What’s the saying again? Oh yes, ‘coming like London buses’.
The yellow cards are in full flow now and now Oriol Romeu has been booked for a foul
on Darwin Nunez.
No complaints about that one, that was an old-school tackle.
18:56, 54′
YELLOW CARD: Girona 0-0 Liverpool (Diaz)
By Harry Bamforth
Now this is harsh.
Luis Diaz has just been booked for a challenge on Alejandro Frances and he
can’t believe it.
Neither can I, he just slipped. It wasn’t a tackle.
18:54
‘Nunez so wasteful’
By Lewis Steele At Estadi Montilivi
Darwin Nunez been so wasteful here again. So many heavy touches and passes going astray.
Diogo Jota’s return will give Liverpool a big boost in that area.
18:53, 52′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Mo Salah has been miles off his best today…
Top players can’t always be at it, but this is not what we have
been used to seeing from Salah this season.
He just can’t impact the game at the moment, but he just needs one chance.
18:52, 50′
BIG CHANCE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Oh, Arnaut Danjuma…
The Girona forward roasts both Dominik Szoboszlai
and Joe Gomez on a brilliant solo run.
They both need tickets to get back in the stadium.
He races into the box and you just expect him to score,
but he blasts his effort miles over the bar.
This lad just needs to work on his finishing and he will be world beater.
18:50, 48′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Whatever Arne Slot said at half-time has not calmed this game down in the slightest.
The end-to-end nature of this match is very much prevalent, neither
side is in control.
I love it.
18:49
‘Slot will want more from Nunez and Diaz’
By Lewis Steele At Estadi Montilivi
The teams are back out for the second half here
and I must take back my earlier words where I said it was mild.
Liverpool have created lots of chances but are also allowing
Girona opportunities at the other end.
Arne Slot will want more from Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz in the second half here.
Cody Gakpo was going through an intense warm-up with fitness coach Conall Murtagh at half-time and could
be the first change before too long.
18:48, 46′
CHANCES! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
My word, this game is just electric.
Within seconds Alisson has to make a big save from Arnaut Danjuma before
Mo Salah sees a chance roll wide.
The opening minute has been as relentless as the first half
was.
18:47, 46′
SECOND HALF: Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Ooooh, a bit of ACDC!
Girona’s sound system tries to pump up its team as the two
teams return to the pitch.
I mean, rock music is enough to pump anyone up.
Anyway, we are back underway.
18:46
‘Lacklustre Liverpool’
By Harry Bamforth
Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United defender, on TNT Sports:
Away from home in Europe you expect pressure. Liverpool have been lacklustre
in their approach, you have to be on it in these
games or you will be punished no matter where they are in the league.
18:42
Nunez struggles continue
By Harry Bamforth
Where to start on Darwin Nunez, eh?
I said earlier that it is a big night for him, but so far he is not delivering for Liverpool.
He had a fair few chances in that first half but never really
looked confident when bearing down on goal.
If he has his shooting boots on, Liverpool could easily have a couple of goals to their name.
He needs to find them for that second half.
18:39
‘Liverpool in second gear’
By Harry Bamforth
Steve McManaman, for Liverpool midfielder, on TNT Sports:
An enjoyable first half considering it’s 0-0, we have had
a plethora of chances. Liverpool looked as if they were in second gear.
Liverpool could step it up a couple of gears in the second half.
18:35
Alisson back on form
By Harry Bamforth
If you didn’t know this was Alisson’s first game back, you would not have been able to guess it from that first half.
The Brazilian has been a busy boy in his first 45
minutes of action in just over two months.
He made four saves in that half with one of them a stunning stop from Yasce
Asprilla.
He certainly showed why he is No 1.
18:31
HALF-TIME: Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
No room for stoppage time.
This match has been one hell of a gripping watch, even if we have not seen a goal yet.
I must say, I’m not sure how we haven’t.
It’s been a throwback to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Electic going forward,
and open at the back.
I’m sure we will get some goals after the break.
18:30, 44′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Oh dear…
There are bad shots from distance and then there are really
bad shots from distance. This one is the latter.
Arnaut Danjuma has just managed to send a shot out for a throw-in, that’s how off-target it is.
He does giggle as he walks away, just like I am.
18:28, 42′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Girona are starting to beat the Liverpool press quite comfortably now.
It’s been an incredibly erratic performance from the Reds which we
are not used to seeing these days,.
I mean, it’s a very entertaining watch, so I’m not complaining.
18:24, 38′
WHAT SAVE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Wow, that is one hell of a save from Alisson!
The Brazilian is called upon once again as Yaser Asprillia rifles a
sizzling effort toward the top corner.
It looks set to nestle in the top corner but Alisson leaps across and nearly catches
the ball somehow.
A brilliant stop, and that’s why he is so important to the Reds.
18:22, 37′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
My word, this game is so open.
It’s end-to-end, with both teams flying forward. It’s one hell
of a match to watch.
I can’t see either side keeping a clean sheet at this rate.
18:21, 35′
CHANCES! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Erm, Darwin Nunez…
The Liverpool striker has just shown exactly why the Reds fans
are getting frustrated with him.
He has two chances in a matter of moments and wastes both
of them.
A cross is whipped into Nunez and he completely miscues his header and it ends up going backwards.
The Reds recycled the ball and Nunez is sent through, but
this time he can only fire the ball straight at Paulo Gazzaniga.
He has to do better there.
18:20, 33′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
What happened there?
Liverpool’s left side decides it’s going to disappear and
suddenly Alejandro Frances is in acres of space on the edge of
the box.
Ryan Gravenberch is a speedy man though and gets
back to block his effort.
That was a tad weird from the Reds…
18:18, 32′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Ooooh, a bit of a nervy moment from Oriol Romeu.
I’m not sure what was going through his head as he is closed down by both Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez.
He is pressed all the way back to the bylin and his clearance
is closed down by Salah.
Luckily for him, it loops into the air and Paulo Gazzaniga collects.
18:15, 29′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
This game has really lost its momentum.
Both sides seemed to have calmed their intensity and now it’s just being disrupted by fouls.
I’m hoping the ace is ramped up soon, otherwise my dinner question will have to come out.
Nobody wants that.
18:11, 26′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
The snipers are back…
Alejandro Frances goes down in a heap as if he has been shot,
he deserves an Oscar.
Luis Diaz barely touches him with his arm as they fight for the ball,
and funnily enough, Girona don’t win the free-kick.
18:08, 22′
CLOSE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Trent Alexander-Arnold can be simply ridiculous at times and this is one of
those times.
He whips a stunning ball into the area and Miguel Gutierrez comes within inches of scoring
an own goal.
The Girona man’s header flies just wide of his
own net, it would have been one hell of a finish.
He wouldn’t have been celebrating, though.
18:04, 18′
CHANCE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Girona are having a real crack!
Miguel Gutierrez is giving the Liverpool defence a host of problems,
and he nearly gives Girona the lead.
He is in acres of space on the left-hand side of the area and the ball comes his way.
The winger then pulls the trigger and Alisson awkwardly punches the ball clear straight to Bryan Gil, who blazes over.
Girona are having a real good spell now.
18:01, 16′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
This crowd have woken up just like their team. It’s getting loud in here.
For all the praise I gave Liverpool early on, they are starting to look a little shaky.
Girona are getting much more of the ball and Liverpool are struggling
to get it back.
Fascinating watch.
17:59, 14′
CHANCE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
This game has suddenly come to life.
Girona are growing in confidence and Alisson has to bail Liverpool out again.
Bryan Gil gets in behind and the flag stays down, but Alisson comes out and smothers him.
I mean, he did look miles offside…
17:58, 12′
BIG SAVE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
That is why Alisson is back in the team!
Girona come so close to taking the lead against the run of play,
but the Brazilian denies them.
The hosts flood forward I numbers and a cross is cleared into the path of Bryan Gil.
The winger looks certain to score with Alisson out of position, but the keeper scrambles across goal to deny him.
Mo salah then counters but sees a poor effort fly wide.
17:55, 10′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Girona just can’t get out, Liverpool have them trapped.
Even when the home side do get the ball, within a matter of seconds they lose
it again.
They are really struggling in these early minutes.
17:54, 8′
CHANCE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
This is utter domination from Liverpool so far.
The Reds are having all the ball and Ryan Gravenberch has started extremely brightly.
He produces a lovely turn in the middle of the park, drives forward,
and slides a superb pass through to Darwin Nunez.
The striker takes the ball in his stride and
lets fly, but Paulo Gazzaniga does well to beat his strike away.
He didn’t really look like scoring, I must say.
17:50, 5′
BIG SAVE! Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
Oh my word, Joe Gomez has nearly scored a goal!
Yes, you are reading that right as the centre-back who has never found the back of the net in his senior
career gets on the end of a corner.
He sends a powerful header toward goal but Paulo Gazzaniga reacts brilliantly
to tip it over the bar.
He won’t get much closer than that – it will come one day…
I think.
17:47, 3′
Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
As you can imagine, Liverpool are having all the ball in these
early moments.
They are knocking it about with real authority and under very little pressure.
But it looks as though Girona don’t mind and just want to get forward quickly when the visitors make
a mistake.
The Reds will need to watch out for the counter.
17:45, 1′
KICK-OFF: Girona 0-0 Liverpool
By Harry Bamforth
The Girona fans have a drum…
All you can hear inside this stadium is them banging it as they try and build
an atmosphere.
There is a huge roar from all four sides of the ground as Liverpool get
the ball rolling.
Let’s hope this is a cracker.
17:43
Here come the teams!
By Harry Bamforth
I am a sucker for electronic music and whoever is running the
tunes at Estadi Montilivi has me in a chokehold.
They play some belting tunes but then they have to
start the Champions League anthem as the two teams walk onto the pitch.
The rest of the stadium falls silent as they take in the moment.
There are plenty of flags being waved by the home fans
in the background and lots of scarves being raised.
A special, special night for the home side.
17:39
Slot: ‘We need to be aware of Girona’s style’
By Harry Bamforth
Arne Slot, Liverpool boss, speaking to TNT Sports:
It feels really good to have Alisson back, we didn’t
want to take any risk at all. Now he is completely
ready to start.
This is a special occasion for Girona. It is always a special occasion for the
team we face and it is nice to be in the position we
are in in the Champions League.
Our players are so experienced, they know what it means to play Champions
League for this club. I assume they are ready
for it, they have to be. The style of Girona is something we have to be aware of.
17:35
Girona’s special occasion
By Harry Bamforth
This is one of the biggest games in Girona’s history.
It’s their first-ever season in Champions League football and now they are facing six-time winners Liverpool.
It doesn’t get much bigger than that.
Estadi Montilivi can only hold just over 14,000 people, it really is a small ground.
But my word can it make some noise.
I’m pretty sure the crowd will be bouncing when they see the teams arise from the tunnel.
Whatever happens in the game, they will always
remember this day.
17:30
15 minutes to go…
By Harry Bamforth
Are we all excited yet?
Mo Salah and Co look like they are as they know kick-off is only 15 minutes away.
Rio Ferdinand did say it was ‘positive vibes only’ at Liverpool, and these pictures show just that.
I wonder if they will be smiling come full-time…
17:27
‘Positive vibes at Liverpool’
By Harry Bamforth
Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United defender, on TNT Sports:
Sometimes you have your best games when you don’t play and that happened this weekend with points dropped and rest.
Arne Slot would have been saying thank goodness for this storm.
Only good positive vibes.
17:21
A festive feel
By Harry Bamforth
Are you feeling festive yet?
I certainly am and it’s all thanks to the tunes being played by the DJ at Estadi Montilivi.
They are blasting the Christmas songs and it has really got me in the mood.
So much so that I have just started singing Feliz Navidad.
I mean, it is a banger…
17:19
‘Question to be had over Kelleher’s future’
By Harry Bamforth
Steve McManaman, for Liverpool midfielder, on TNT Sports:
Alisson is the No 1. When he is fit he plays.
There is a wider question to be had over Kelleher’s
future.
He played a lot this year and last year and with then ew goalkeeper you presume they have had a conversation saying he will be allowed to leave on a
big fee.
Unfortunately, there is no role like it, there is
a No 1 and a pecking order and Alisson becker is No 1.

Alisson back in action
By Harry Bamforth
A sight Liverpool fans have been waiting to see for some time.
Alisson has just taken to the grass for his warm-up and it’s fair to say
the away fans are happy to see him.
I must say, that really is a tiny away end, even smaller than Brentford somehow.
I wasn’t sure that was possible in elite football.
It obviously is…

‘Alisson has been nearing fitness for weeks’
By Lewis Steele At Estadi Montilivi
Alisson is back in the XI after missing two months and 11 matches with a hamstring injury.
Mail Sport believes he has actually been nearing fitness
for several weeks but due to the form of Caoimhin Kelleher,
Arne Slot and Co did not have a reason to rush their No 1 back.
That might be good in the long run given Alisson has had
several injuries in the last 18 months and has perhaps
returned quicker than he needed to.
It’s a full-strength team – of those fit and available – otherwise,
which signals Liverpool’s intent to come here and make it
six wins from six in Europe. If they do, those next two games against Lille and PSV Eindhoven will offer a chance for rotation.
17:07
Arne or Pep?
By Harry Bamforth
Is that you, Pep Guardiola?
No, I am not saying that because both the Spaniard and Arne Slot have no hair…
I am just referencing the fact that Guardiola is always seen staring into space from the dugout before kick-off.
And well, it looks like Slot is following in his footsteps this evening.
I must say, he does not look nearly as stressed as
Guardiola has done in recent weeks.
No scratches on his head either.
17:01
Nunez gets the nod
By Harry Bamforth
I feel like I say this a lot, but it’s a huge night for Darwin Nunez.
His most recent performance in a Liverpool shirt earned
him a lot of criticism from his own fans.
When I say criticism, he was getting pelters on social media.
Nunez has only scored three goals in 18 matches in all competitions.
Not great, right?
With Diogo Jota now nearing a return following injury, his minutes may
start to reduce quickly if he fails to perform.
A goal tonight would certainly help his cause.
16:56
Spaniards struggles against PL sides
By Harry Bamforth
Yep, you read that right.
Spanish teams are usually known for their domination against English teams in Europe.
Well, it seems like times are changing.
Spanish teams are winless in their last seven games against English opponents in the Champions League,
since Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in April
2023.
Indeed, that was also the last time a Spanish
side managed to stop an English opponent from scoring.
Liverpool’s last European match happened
to be against Real Madrid, and we all know how that went…

‘Huge match for Girona’
By Lewis Steele At Estadi Montilivi
The atmosphere is building here at Estadi Montilivi, a lovely little ground.
While it is not exactly warm, it was still mild enough for me to work up an almighty sweat on the arduous,
uphill walk from the old town to the ground – taxis don’t seem to exist in this city!
And this is a huge match for the home team, with every fan being given a flag to wave on kick-off.
Regardless of the result, it will be a historic night in the
club’s history.

Girona Team News – Van de Beek STARTS
By Harry Bamforth
Are we sure this isn’t Tottenham?
Girona are starting three former Spurs stars in their line-up today as well as three other ex-Premier League
players.
Have you spotted who they are in the video?
Well, if you haven’t, I’ll tell you. Paulo Gazzaniga, Bryan Gil,
and Arnaut Danjuma once all adorned the white of
Tottenham, but start tonight for Girona.
Daley Blind, Donny van de Beek, and Oriol Romeu also start for the Spanish side.
What a throwback!

Assist King Salah
By Harry Bamforth
We have to talk about this man, don’t we?
Mohamed Salah is having the season of his life, everything he touches at the moment
turns to gold.
Despite the contract situation looming over his head, the
winger just keeps delivering the goods.
Well, over the weekend it was revealed that Salah has indeed been offered a new contract to stay at Liverpool.
An agreement is not close, but I wonder if that will make him feel a little more valued at the club.
It will hardly affect his performance, he is already flying.
Salah has assisted four goals in five Champions League appearances for Liverpool this term, already
his joint-most in a single edition.
Only in the 2017-18 season has a Liverpool player made more than four assists in a
Champions League campaign, and that was James Milner and Roberto Firmino.
I’m sure Salah will want to catch his old pals.
16:39
The return of Alisson
By Harry Bamforth
Liverpool fans, you must be buzzing.
After months of injury, Alisson will take to the pitch once more
for the Reds. A huge boost.
It’s weird though because it’s not like Arne Slot’s side has really missed his presence.
Don’t get me wrong, he is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the world,
if not the best.
But the job Caomihin Kellher has done in his absence has been exemplary.
I wonder how the Irishman is feeling?
16:32
Liverpool Team News – Alisson STARTS
By Harry Bamforth
Look who’s back…
After over two months out with a hamstring problem, Alisson returns in between the sticks for Liverpool.
What a bonus that is for the Reds.
Arne Slot has gone pretty strong for this one with Dominik Szoboszlai,
Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Luis Diaz all coming in to start.
There is certainly no holding back.
16:28
Slot: ‘We need to win’
By Harry Bamforth
Arne Slot, Liverpool head coach, speaking on Monday:
I have said it many times, but at the end of the season you
can judge it in the best possible way – if it’s helpful to end up in the top eight, if it’s helpful to end up as No.1.
Of course, it seems to be really helpful to end up first eight, but if every time you play your starters,
which we have done until now almost every time, then you also need the
results.
We try to do this to, first of all, be in the highest possible position but
also to skip the next round. If in the end it means by playing your starters always,
skipping that round and still having a very difficult draw
then we maybe are going to think about it differently
next season, what we are going to do in the group stage.
That is something we have to wait and see in the end of the season, where this will lead us.
First of all, we want to stay in the top eight and therefore we think we need a win – and the first chance we have is tomorrow night.
16:23
Back in action
By Harry Bamforth
Liverpool fans, I bet you are well-rested.
December is usually a tumultuous time to be a
football fan with the amount of football that is on, it can be brutal.
But after the Merseyside Derby was postponed at the weekend,
Liverpool have had an extended rest.
It means that Arne Slot is expected to start a very strong line-up as his side look to continue their fine form this evening.
The Reds are unbeaten in all competitions since September 14 and
have nearly put a for wrong in Europe.
We may be in December, but it’s still hard to believe just how good this Liverpool team is.
After getting a few extra days off, they will be desperate
to get back out on that pitch tonight and show what they can do.
The question is, will that rest have done them any good?
16:18
How things stand
By Harry Bamforth
Now this is a pretty sight for Liverpool fans,
isn’t it?
Five matches, five wins, and just one goal conceded.
A perfect group phase that nobody expected.
As you can see, the teams are pretty bunched up below them, and there is just so much
at stake.
And with Inter Milan facing Bayer Leverkusen later, and Arsenal facing Monaco, Liverpool can seal their fete tonight.
A win will take them to 18 points and the promised land
of the round of 16.
It will not be straightforward, though.
16:15
Reds chase qualification
By Harry Bamforth
What a night we have in store for you today?
The thrills and spills of December are non-stop at the moment and now we turn back to European action.
Tonight, all eyes are on Girona as Liverpool seek to secure automatic
qualification for the Champions League knockout stages.
Arne Slot’s side have a 100 per cent record in the league phase
and a win today would secure their place in the
next round.
Can they get the job done?
Well, I guess we are going to ave to wait and see.
Let’s get this show on the road then.

Welcome to Ice City: Russia plans to build frozen community 1,000 miles from North
Pole… as race for Arctic minerals heats up

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside the Arctic
Circle – in the Kremlin’s latest move to back its claim to vast oil and gas reserves under
the polar ice cap.
Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear cub cartoon hero, the initial 5,000 residents will live under a
vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures sinking below minus 30C in winter.
‘This city will be of strategic importance as Russia’s northern outpost,’
said architect Valery Rzhevskiy who has shown its modernistic designs to an approving
Vladimir Putin.
Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built on the remote island of Kotelniy,
in the Novosibirsk archipelago, some 1,000 miles from the North Pole
Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station but in comparison is much larger – one mile long and
800 yards wide
Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards and secret service
officers, as well as scientists and explorers, as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral riches.
All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its own specially regulated temperate climate – including many facilities to make inhabitants of other cities envious.
‘We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with attractions, an Aqua complex,
hotels and a cathedral. Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones,
a hospital, and sport facilities are planned, too,’ said Rzhevskiy.

‘We want people who will be living and working here not to realise
they are in some closed space with an aggressive Arctic climate outside.’
The extraordinary venture – nicknamed ‘wonder
city’ – will be built at a cost of up to £4 billion on the remote
island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago , some 1,000 miles
from the North Pole, closer than any other Russian city.
Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and
even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point.
Bleak: Strong winds make the area one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point
The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station, but it is vast by comparison – just short of one mile long
and 800 yards wide.
‘So far it’s the only project in the world with an artificial climate
and integral life support – just like on the space station. Not only
is it a new word in architecture, but in human living too.
We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear power station. Food wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish and poultry farms,
greenhouses, a wheat processing factory and bakeries.
‘There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city will have two factories converting all kinds into ashes.’
It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which should pay the costs of the development, it is claimed.
‘This project is designed to work on any surface, even on the Moon if needed,’ said Rzhevskiy, one of
Russia’s top architects.
The ice city plans – currently with no fixed timetable for opening
- comes as all countries with territory touching Arctic waters are gearing
up to make competing demands to the United Nations over
underwater mineral exploitation rights.
Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer Artur Chilingarov placed his
country’s flag in the Arctic seabed in 2007.
‘We must prove the north pole is an extension of the Russian land mass,’ he said at the time.
A Canadian think tank this year even warned that ‘an arms race maybe beginning’, expressing concerns at the risk of conflict.
The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted
their naval presence in Arctic waters amid warnings of a Cold War that could literally be cold
- except perhaps at Umka.

WASHINGTON, Feb 2 (Reuters) – The rush of people leaving urban areas for the suburbs because of the
coronavirus may have ended one of the nation’s most remarkable streaks of
urban growth, according to estimates from data firm Unacast that tracked changes
in the home location of cell phones over the past year.
The last time Harris County, Texas saw a population decline was back in the mid-1980s, when oil prices had crashed 50% in a few weeks, and the booming county’s residency numbers, which include the city
of Houston, dropped for three of the four years from 1985 to 1988.
In yet another sign of how the pandemic may be reshuffling U.S.
life and economics, the data indicate Harris County lost
a net of around 10,000 people to neighboring
counties last year, part of a trend seen in home sale patterns, retail foot traffic, and other data nationwide.
If the estimate is confirmed when the U.S. government releases its
latest county-level population numbers next month, it will end 31 years of steady
growth that increased Harris County’s population by
around 70%, to more than 4.7 million, double the growth rate of the rest of the country.
“It mirrors what we see in other parts of the country. People are fleeing metro areas,” said Unacast Chief Executive Officer
Thomas Walle.
An earlier Unacast study of New York City estimated, for
example, that a net of 70,000 people had left, with implications for the city’s housing
market, and for its shops and restaurants once the pandemic subsides.
The Unacast data is not meant as a global demographic estimate.
It does not for example include the impact elevated death rates have had on different localities because of COVID-19, which has killed over 440,000 people in the United States, or the effect of changes in fertility
rates and immigration patterns.
It also cannot distinguish whether the people who apparently relocated
during the pandemic bought new houses in which they intend to remain, or rented and plan to return to the city.
The data, which examines whether a cell phone’s overnight location switched from one month to the next,
provides a “directionally” strong signal of people leaving
more crowded areas for less crowded ones, Walle said.
Houston has been among the “superstar” cities that particularly in the last decade enjoyed disproportionate gains
in people and jobs. It currently ranks third in population among U.S.
cities and is closing in on Chicago and Cook County, for example, which like many industrial Midwest locations has been losing population since the 1970s.
If work from home and internet commerce reshuffle where people live and spend the day, it could mean a more lengthy recovery for the economy as a whole
as office buildings struggle to find new tenants,
restaurants and shops that rely on their business shutter, and service workers see demand for their jobs move elsewhere.
A study last year by Dallas Fed economists, using data
on real estate sales and prices, foot traffic to retail locations,
and other large data sets concluded that a flight from densely populated areas was well underway.
“If work-from-home becomes more prevalent and visiting amenities continues to be curbed, the desirability of large cities and dense neighborhoods would remain reduced for a long time to come,” the research concluded.

HONG KONG/SHANGHAI, Sept 16 (Reuters) – China Evergrande Group’s main unit, Hengda Real Estate Group Co Ltd, applied on Thursday
to suspend trading of its onshore corporate bonds following a
downgrade, as the country’s No.2 property developer wrestles with a liquidity crisis.
The application follows repeated trading freezes of the bonds in recent days
by the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges due to volatile trade.
With total liabilities of more than $300 billion, Evergrande is scrambling to raise
funds as it teeters between a messy meltdown with far-reaching impacts, a managed collapse or a government bailout.
Suspension of trade in Hendga’s onshore corporate bonds indicates an increasing likelihood
of defaults and restructuring, market participants said.
Hengda received notice on Sept. 15 from rating agency China Chengxin International (CCXI) that the bonds’ ratings had
been downgraded to A from AA, and that both the bonds’ ratings and its issuer rating were put on a
watch list for further downgrades, it said in a stock exchange filing.
Hengda applied to suspend trade of its onshore corporate bonds for one day, it said.
On the resumption of trade on Sept. 17, its Shanghai and Shenzhen exchange-traded bonds will only be
traded through negotiated transactions.
A bond trader, who declined to be identified, said
that the changes in the trading mechanism were likely aimed
at limiting participation and curbing volatility.
“Many companies would adjust the trading mechanism of their bonds ahead of default,” he said.
The company’s January 2023 Shenzhen-traded bond was last quoted at 24.99 yuan on Wednesday, and its Shanghai-traded May 2023 bond traded
at 30 yuan.
James Shi, distressed debt analyst at credit analytics provider
Reorg, said that an Evergrande default has been largely priced into the market, and that
a recovery ratio will likely be low in the case of an expected restructuring.
“The market is pretty certain Evergrande will default,” Shi said.
A very low recovery ratio would be due partly
to deep losses at many of Evergrande’s non-core businesses, making them hard to liquidate, he said.
A report by CreditSights this week said the probability
of liquidation was low if Evergrande defaults.
A Shanghai-based vulture bond fund manager, who specialises in junk-rated bonds, said
if Evergrande’s bonds fell below 20 cents on the dollar,
the valuation would be attractive for patient investors as a restructuring may
take several years.
In the offshore market, Evergrande’s 8.75% June 2025 dollar bond was trading at 29.375
cents on Thursday morning, up about 4 cents from lows on Wednesday,
according to financial data provider Duration Finance.
Goldman Sachs said in a report that because Evergrande has dollar bonds issued by
both the parent company and a special purpose vehicle, recoveries in a potential restructuring could differ between the two sets of bonds, and any potential restructuring process may be prolonged.
Worries over possible contagion from Evergrande’s debt
crisis have spilled over to other Chinese high-yield issuers.
An index of Chinese high-yield dollar debt fell to 374.646 on Thursday morning, its
lowest level since April 14, 2020.
CCXI’s downgrade of the developer was its second this month.
A downgrade of Evergrande and its onshore bonds to AA from AAA on Sept.
2 resulted in the bonds being made ineligible
for pledged repo trading.
Rating agency S&P this week further downgraded Evergrande to “CC” from
“CCC”, with a negative outlook, citing reduced liquidity and default risks including the possibility
of debt restructuring, while Fitch said an Evergrande default could expose numerous sectors to heightened credit risk.

Russia’s propaganda machine is spreading fake news
on a YouTube channel cunningly disguised to target young people.
The reports on ICYMI – In Case You Missed It – feature bright,
colourful graphics and are presented by attractive English-speaking stars.
But what unsuspecting viewers will not know is that the videos
are made by Russia Today (RT), the Kremlin-funded broadcaster
that is currently under investigation by Ofcom.

In one recent ICYMI video – fronted by London-based
RT presenter Polina Boiko, who speaks with a cut-glass British accent – claims that
Russia was behind the Salisbury attack are mocked.
Boiko says the ‘real victims’ were Sergei Skripal’s dead guinea pigs.

And a third clip is simply called ‘Whatever goes wrong, you can always blame a Russian!’

Earlier this year, YouTube announced it would label videos created by the
Russian government, such as the ones pushed by RT, with a disclaimer to US viewers stating the channel ‘is funded
in whole or in part by the Russian government’.
But ICYMI does not have that disclaimer on its channel.
RT said: ‘ICYMI is an editorially independent production and it is its

‘However we are hardly trying to hide it as a show we broadcast – it is the first show featured on the RT.com website and is helmed

It might be one of the most of the most visited stores on the high street,
but Topshop is failing to live up to the standards expected by its clientele.
In a new survey by consumer champions Which?, the fashion retailer came 98th in a list of 100 UK high
street stores followed by WHSmith at 99 and mobile phone retailer EE at the bottom of the pile.
Based on responses from 9,500 shoppers, shops were rated on prices, environment, customer service and, the range
and quality of products.

BHS ranked bottom of all the UK department stores with customers describing
its stock as ‘outdated’, while another added that it ‘does not give the impression of being a good-quality store’.
Performing equally poorly was H&M which also found itself
languishing in the bottom five, alongside competitor Topshop.
EE was named the worst shop as customers commented on long waiting times, busy stores and sometimes unhelpful
staff
At the other end of the table, department store John Lewis narrowly missed out on the top spot for the second year running, with Lush Cosmetics claiming first place.
Lush scored highest for product range and quality,
customer service and store environment, with staff described as ‘helpful’ and ‘friendly’, and the products as
‘excellent’.
In the list of 100 stores BHS came 96th with customers describing it
as outdated
However, it wasn’t all good news for the cosmetics retailer which got a lower
score on pricing, with one shopper saying it is ‘ideal for gifts, but high prices.’
John Lewis also lost marks for its high prices with customers noting that
although products are ‘great quality’, they ‘can be expensive’.
In an editorial to accompany the new research, Which? said that although
tidiness and short queues boosted the shopping experience,
they were also regarded as relatively unimportant.
‘Although tidy stores with short queues make for a pleasant shopping experience, our analysis found that these factors are
generally the least important in creating a positive impression on shoppers – and have the least impact on the overall customer score.’
Price is the most important factor when deciding where to shop with four
in 10 (40 per cent) saying this was their top consideration.
Which? Editor Richard Headland added: ‘Consumers look for quality in both products and service.
If retailers can get their products right, along with excellent customer service
and a great shopping environment, customers will keep coming back through their doors.’

An explosives enthusiast who let off more than 40 homemade bombs in his back garden walked free from court after he said he was preparing for a Doomsday event.
Simon Pilgrim, 41, was caught with improvised explosive devices in his bedroom at
a multi-occupancy property in King Alfred Street, Derby,
on December, 5, 2021.
In the days before his arrest he had been searching YouTube for how to
make a pressure cooker bomb, a Molotov cocktail, a
flamethrower and an acid gun, the court heard.
Also found in his room were pipes, black clothing, knee pads,
a handcuff key, metal piping, peroxide hair dye, sulphur
and body armour.

Mr Pilgrim denied three charges of possession of an explosive substance in relation to black powder, ‘rocket
candy’ and pyrotechnic fuses at the Old Baily.
He also denied three counts of possession of a document for terrorist purposes.
The jury retired on Friday, December, 16 and cleared
Mr Pilgrim of all the charges on Monday,
December, 19.
He told police he was trying to create a safer form of firework and he
wanted to open a firework store.
Pilgrim also claimed he was a ‘prepper’ – someone who is preparing for a Doomsday event.
He was cleared on all charges after a two week Old Bailey trial and
claimed he bought a stab vest for paintballing and had also taken an archery course.
Some 50 houses were evacuated until the bomb squad ensured
the area was safe
Prosecutor Emma Gargitter told the court: ‘These are all
texts which deliberately set out ways in which to create devices or substances to endanger a person’s life
or set out methods which could cause serious violence
to someone.
‘At the time of his arrest, on 5 December 2021, Simon Pilgrim was living in room three of a multi-occupancy address on King Alfred Street, Derby.
‘His room was sparsely furnished, but in it were found 13 viable
improvised explosive devices, along with a variety of substances and
items that could be used to make more.
‘Although some of the charges contain allegations
under the Terrorism Act, Simon Pilgrim is not being prosecuted for being
a terrorist.
‘At the heart of this case lies his interest in explosives and explosive devices.
This interest was unregulated, dangerous and without a lawful purpose.
‘Whilst the Crown do not set out to prove that Simon Pilgrim was
intending to use these documents and explosives to cause injury to persons or damage to property, his activities did incur significant risk that such
harm might be caused, even if inadvertently.
‘In total, there was approximately 307g of homemade explosives found, along with the chemicals to manufacture approximately 824g more.
‘In the garden were found the suspected remains of over 40 improvised explosive devices, blackened and burnt.
‘A steel Thermos flask was also found and seized from his room.
The Crown say Simon Pilgrim had drilled a hole in the lid of this flask,
indicating that it was intended to be used as a container for an improvised
explosive device.
‘It is of note that amongst the exhibits there was a distinct absence of the chemicals used to make
the colours usually associated with fireworks.’
Also found in his room were pipes, black clothing, knee pads,
a handcuff key, metal piping, peroxide hair dye, sulphur and body armour.
In the days before his arrest he had been searching YouTube for how to make a pressure cooker bomb,
a Molotov cocktail, a flamethrower and an acid gun, the court heard.
Following his arrest Pilgrim said he was
planning to start a pyrotechnics firm.
Pilgrim said: ‘I make small amounts, I don’t want to make large amounts because that will get me into
trouble.’
